CURRENT TOPICS - ONE WAY STREETS
Click here to email your comments.
My husband and I have lived on DWP
for many years. We agree that people drive too fast in our
neighborhood. We agree that sidewalks on one side of every
street would be good for the safety of pedestrians. One way
streets however seems a bit extreme There are a few places
along Driftwood Drive in particular that are very narrow and not
a good place for pedestrians. Maybe an elevated walkway could
be installed in those places where there terrain doesn't allow a
sidewalk?
I make a conscience effort to watch
my speed and look for pedestrians and their pets on our
streets. I am a mother, grandmother and animal lover.
Unfortunately, I've had certain unnamed but known individuals
yell at me, make gestures and cuss at me to slow down on
Driftwood Drive. We have a posted speed limit which I obey.
When I see people walking their pets down the middle of the
street, I slow down even further and hug the opposite side of
the road. Maybe if we had sidewalks down one side of our roads,
these pedestrians with animals would be forced to stay on the
sidewalk rather than walking down the middle of the road?

I own a home on
185th Ave E that has been in my family for almost 30
years. I believe the one way street concept will cause more
problems than it will solve. I believe that people will likely
drive faster because of the additional time needed to get off the
point than they do currently. I would advocate for the use of speed
bumps before I would support one way streets.

I would like to
see improvements made for pedestrians and bicyclists to get onto and
off Driftwood Point. Specifically, on Driftwood Drive, between 182nd
and Sumner Tapps.
I walk regularly
on most of our roads within the Point and feel that one way streets
would not benefit us as a rule. I don't feel threatened by our
traffic, I find it relatively low. I do however have a strong
concern for the safety of anyone trying to walk or bicycle on
Driftwood Drive.
I would advocate
for improvements to the arterial only.

Driftwood Point members and neighbors:
Walking paths have been discussed in meeting and listed a future improvement
items. If you have been following the board minutes you know in
August a letter was sent to Shawn Bunny,
(click here for copy of minutes) to see if assistance is available to add
walking paths to the streets of Driftwood Point. A recent suggestion
made, that maybe worth following up on suggested use of one-way loops, and we
are asking for your ideas and input. If enough interest and support
is shown, more research and work can be done to develop and bring forward ideas
to the board and members for review and possible approval in the up coming year.
We are asking if you are interested in walking / biking paths, (pedestrian
use lanes), on Drift Point streets. If so do you have any ideas how they
might be accomplished with little or no funding. One idea presented
suggests we could provide paved pedestrian use lanes, attempt to reduce the
speed of automobile traffic, improve traffic flows, and improve the overall
safety of our streets. The proposal suggest converting the majority of the
Driftwood Point streets to one-way streets with painted and marked pedestrian
and traffic lanes utilizing half of the existing street. Signs for
traffic flow, traffic speed, and pedestrian use lanes could be installed.
One-way loops would range from .4 miles to 1.4 miles. Most
homeowners will end up doing about a 1 mile loop to get on and back off of
Driftwood Point. All the one-way streets could immediately have
paved pedestrian use lanes. The sections of streets and dead
end streets with two-way traffic would require more analysis and work to develop
the pedestrian uses lanes on a shoulder of the street. Please send
us your comments, take a look at the proposed map above.
We want to hear from you, your written comment, emails or join us at the next
board meeting. If enough interest is voiced, more work will be done
on this and any other ideas that are presented to facilitate safer walking and
biking for all in our neighborhood.
One-way loop lengths:
Driftwood Drive East to 185th Avenue East - loop = 1.0 miles
183rd Ave. E. to 185th Ave. E - loop = .8 miles
28th Street East - loop = .4 miles
25th St. Ct. E. to 26th St. Ct. E - loop = 1.0 miles
185th Ave. E. to 179th Ave. E. - loop - 1.4 miles
Two-way streets requiring shoulder
improvements to accommodate pedestrian use lane:
Driftwood Drive East up from Sumner Tapps Hwy. E. to 181st Ave. East
176th Ave. East
179th Ave. East to Island 21
181st Ave. East
26th St. Ct. E. from 181st Ave. E. to 185th Ave. E.
180th to 27th
182nd Ave. E.
184th Ave. E.
Driftwood Dr. E. from 185th Ave. E. to Park
